Golden Globes 2019: Everything to Know About Chrissy Metz's Custom Tanya Taylor Gown

The Golden Globes always kick off the year with some major fashion moments. One of the favorite looks of the night happened to come courtesy of one of our favorites, Chrissy Metz. The This Is Us actress stepped out in a custom creation from designer Tanya Taylor. The sweeping red gown featured voluminous puff sleeves embellished with over a thousand crystals. And Glamour got some exclusive insight into how this epic dress came together.

The process of creating Metz's Golden Globes gown began two months before the actual event, Taylor tells Glamour. "We love Chrissy in red and wanted to design a dress for her that played with volume, drama, and made her feel incredible," she says. "I love her décolletage and wanted an open neck to show off her femininity."

"Because this dress is for the Golden Globes, we wanted the dress to have elements of traditional evening wear, such as an interior corset, crystal embellishment, a 'train'—however, we wanted to turn those traditions on their head a little," the designer continues. "The corset isn't visible, the crystals are red and geometric rather than traditional floral, the train doesn’t actually reach the floor [but rather] floats."

Her team also had to consider practicality: Metz is presenting at tonight's ceremony, so her gown had to be "comfortable, functional, and [make] her feel amazing," Taylor says. "I wanted her to feel confident and bring out her best self. I want all women to feel their best when they wear Tanya Taylor, and for Chrissy, I wanted her to step on stage shining."

They had two fittings to perfect the garment, which features over 1,200 crystals individually sewn onto the sleeves. "In order to keep the drama, volume, and shape of the sleeves, we reinforced the interior of the sleeves with multiple layers of organza," Taylor says, adding that they faced the high-low hem of the skirt with horse hair in order to hold its shape.

Metz tells Glamour that she and stylist Penny Lovell "both wanted a statement that speaks for itself while showcasing intricate artistry" for the Golden Globes. "We also wanted a classic gown with a powerful contemporary edge. "

"Tanya has a wonderful way of elevating a fabric into a complete look and theme while creating a wearable piece—that’s very important to me," Metz says of the designer. The main difference between this look and other Tanya Taylor ones she's worn, she says, is that this is "one of the boldest [ones] we've ever done."

"Chrissy is becoming more fearless with her fashion," says Taylor. "The process is playful and has incredible synergy."

Metz adds: "Fashion is about expressing your individuality, and Tanya achieves that effortlessly in all of our creative collaborations. I'm reminded that I don't have to settle and we can push boundaries, especially as I'm [an] 'unconventional' dress size—that's true artistry."
