5 fashion trends set to be big in spring 2019

As we head into the new season, we're already looking forward to slightly warmer days, brighter evenings and all the new fashion trends that come with spring.

To get us and our wardrobes ready for the new season style we turned to our fashion expert Gabriella Minchella. She gave us a little insight into five trends that are set to be big in the coming months and how you can get the look...

"All of the big trends this season are more of a continuation of what we saw in autumn/winter. Everyone is thinking more about the environment and so this season it's not about buying a whole new wardrobe, it's about wearing what you have in a different way," Gabriella said.

"For example, you might already own lots of pink but you just haven't been wearing all your pink pieces together. The trends this season are really accessible and you'll only need to add one or two things to your wardrobe to get the look."

Coloured Tailoring

From oversized blazers to wide-leg trousers, prepare to see lots of bold brights and pretty pastel two-pieces all over the high street this spring.

"There was a lot of tailoring on the catwalks this season and, in true spring/summer style, everything was a little loose and more fluid. Materials were lighter and it all felt more summery," Gabriella revealed.

"While there were lots of bright colours, there were pastels in there too from mint to pale pink. This is quite a good trend as it will work for everyone, whether you prefer brighter colours or pastel tones."

"This season gives a whole new meaning to tailoring, the pieces are loose and oversized which is also great if you do go for bright colours as it takes the edge off," Gabriella said.

Clashing Prints

Before now, you might never have thought to pair a leopard print skirt with your favourite stripe top but this spring it's going to be your go-to combination.

"There's going to be a lot of print clashing this season. On the catwalks it was all over the place, everything from florals and stripes mixed together with animal print and even checks," Gabriella said.

She explained: "It's all those recent print trends we've had – for example, animal print in the autumn and checks in the winter – but this season is all about joining them together."

Gabriella says you don't need to worry about what goes with what when it comes to prints. The main point with this trend is you can wear any prints you want!

Gabriella's top tip: Don't think about the print but do think about the colours. You want them to complement each other so keep it all pastels or primary colours or monochrome with just a pop of colour.

Craftwork

While vintage dresses and tablecloths may come to mind when you think of crochet and lace, that's all going to change this year. Gabriella says both are going be everywhere this spring.

"It's all very handmade with lots of crochet, tassels and lace. There's a 70s, folky edge to this trend but still with a contemporary feel," Gabriella said.

"The way we usually think of lace is very ladylike and proper but this season we'll see a new way to wear it. It's looser, oversized and with a sporty edge. This trend is going all the way through to accessories, with crochet bags and frayed tassels set to be everywhere."

Pink

From pastel pinks to bold fuchsias, you'll soon be seeing the statement colour all over the high street.

"Last season, there was a lot of sugary, pastel pink but this season we'll see more dusty rose and fuchsia. It's the grown-up way to do pink," Gabriella said.

She added: "The pieces all feel a little older too, with wide-leg trousers and blazers. Pink is super feminine but doesn't feel too much when you're wearing more relaxed, oversized pieces."

Gabriella's top tip: If you're going to mix pink with print, go for a stripe. It's stronger and a bit bolder than opting for pink florals.

Utility Style

Boiler suits and khaki jackets have been on the high street for a while now but, this season, we'll see a new way of working the utility trend.

"It's a lot prettier this season," Gabriella told us. "Think utility trousers paired with gorgeous, frilly blouses. It's all a little softer and more floaty with a summer spin on it."

So, there you have it – all the big trends to look out for on the high street this season and exactly how to incorporate them into your wardrobe.
